There are several ways that this can be achieved and they are improving all the time. However please be aware that communication from the Unit is not always available due to operational reasons, on occasions connectivity issues may be experienced or they may be in an area in which some of these noted are not available.   It is also essential that you do not share any information that may jeopardise the safety of the Unit whilst they are away so do not share any dates, locations or times across any social media platforms, which also includes private messaging unless carried out within the RN Forum.   How can I directly contact my loved one? SSBNs and occasionally to those on other submarines if operational reasons dictate. The Boat issues Familygram forms along with the postal / e-mail address.  Familygrams  are limited to either 60 or 120 word messages.    How can they directly contact me? Unfortunately, unless alongside your serving person will not be able to contact you.   How can I communicate with other Families and Friends? This Forum located on the Royal Navy Website has been set up to provide a secure environment for Family and Friends to communicate with each other and for Navy Command and the Units to share official updates with their Service Community. The RN Forum is set up as two main areas: Information for all  – this area is known as the NS FPS Information Forum and serves as a portal for national and local information, events and security allowed updates on Service life. There is no requirement to be a member to view this information. Members area  - The environment we are now in contains individual pages for deployed ships and units. It allows families and units the ability to post personal questions or topics for debate, view newsletters and topical information. Access to this area is strictly controlled to serving persons and their families. This section is also moderated to ensure privacy and security. Did you know you can subscribe to any pages of interest including the NS FPS Information Forum? Once subscribed, each time a new post has been added you will automatically get a notification to the email address you used when you registered ensuring you never miss an update. There is also a private message facility that you can utilise to communicate with other individuals away from the main pages. Facebook is now being used in an official capacity to communicate with Family and Friends of service personnel. Main pages for information include Royal Navy, Royal Marines and  NSFamilyPeopleSupport . NS FPS also manage official Facebook groups which are closed to ensure only the correct individuals are members. All Official closed groups are linked to the NSFamilyPeopleSupport page. Locality ones include: Arbroath, Culdrose, Chivenor, Lympstone, Northwood, Portsmouth, Plymouth, Scotland, Taunton and Yeovilton – to search add ‘Naval Service Community’ after the location. These not only include local activities and events but provide you with a way in which to communicate with others and gain support.   As with the RN Forum, all Facebook official groups are moderated to ensure safety of individuals as well as the Units which is especially important regarding OPSEC and PERSEC regulations.   How do I keep up with what the Unit is doing? R oyal Navy Website  is home to the Official Royal Navy Service web pages. This is a Command trusted source of information regarding all aspects of Naval life. By searching for the relevant ship / unit you are currently associated with, you see the latest news feeds and other information. Unit Newsletter and Commanding Officers messages  are uploaded to the Units page within the RN Forum. You can also leave comments here, which will be fed back to the Unit.   Twitter  is being used in an official capacity by many Units. Links to those set up can be found on their Royal Navy Website page.   What other communications channels are available to find out more about the Armed Forces? Forces Network   is your one location to find out about all the platforms that provide media services to Serving Personnel and their Families. They include:   The British Forces Broadcasting Service (BFBS)  provides entertainment, information, radio and TV programmes for deployed Armed Forces personnel in theatres of operations across the world.   BFBS Radio  can be accessed from the UK through a DAB device, Sky and FreeSat systems. It has a number of UK stations as well as “local” worldwide stations. They offer a message service which will be broadcast on the appropriate station relative to the serving person’s unit location. BFBS TV  shows several channels such as BBC1 & Sky Sports. These are broadcast through local base/unit/ship connections.   BRITISH FORCES NEWS  is where a wide range of information, news and features are accessible on-line.   FORCES TV  is a 24-hour factual channel devoted to the work of the Armed Forces and the world of defence. They broadcast news, features, documentaries and some live coverage of armed Forces events. It is available on Sky, Virgin, FreeSat systems and FREEVIEW. E-mail  accounts are set up when the individual joins a unit – this can sometimes take a few days to activate so please be patient. Restrictions can be made on the size of e-mails that can be received and sent, so please consider this when adding attachments such as photos. There will be times some units may go silent – during this time they cannot send e-mails to you but they can still receive them. If time allows a notification may be sent in advance or a post put into the “inside” area of this Forums and NS FPS will do the upmost to make sure this happens to alleviate any family concerns.   Sending letters and parcel s   can be done regularly by all using the correct postal address which must include a BFPO Number: Rank/Rate Name Service Number Ship/Unit BFPO xxx The Mod Enduring Families Free Mail Service (EFFMS )  is a scheme which enables packets and letters to be sent free to named Service personnel on qualifying operations once they reach their operational area. Navy Command send a list monthly to BFPO so that they can activate this service. Packets are limited to 2kg in weight and are approximately shoe box size. Care should be taken to ensure no prohibited items are included in the package.   All packages, letters or cards sent under this scheme must be taken to a post office counter and must be correctly addressed. If you live outside of the UK you will need to pay for postage to the UK and remember to write ‘GB’ after the BFPO number. Check through the link below to confirm that the Unit is listed as a qualifying free BFPO. There is also a BFPO App that can assist you and details of this can be found in the enclosed leaflet.   Forces Free Air Letters (FFALS)  is the cheapest and easiest way of writing to those away based on or in Units abroad is to use the blue flimsy HM Forces Aerograms (known as ‘Blueys’), free from all post offices. No enclosures of any kind are allowed but they are great for a quick letter or a drawing from any children!   Not all deployed units can have these sent for free so a first-class stamp will be required. A list of those that are free can be found at the link provided.   Blueys  are available from your local Post Office or if you are having difficulty getting some, please contact your nearest NS FPS Information Officer who will place them in the post for you: rnrm-wio@royalnavymail.mod.uk   WelComE   is a telephone and internet service which allows connectivity from a Unit whilst they are deployed. If you ask your serving person for their account details you will be able to leave them voicemails which are free of charge. You can also top up their minutes so they have longer to call home.   How can they directly contact me ? WelComE  enables deployed UK Service personnel to make at least 30 minutes of publicly funded phone calls to any location in the world each week. Service personnel, family and friends can top-up the call time using the Top-Up Service. Family and friends can also leave voicemail messages for personnel to retrieve free of charge.   Calls made using the WelComE service will show up as being from Stevenage or 01438 775 477. We recommend that family and friends to save this telephone number to their mobile phone book.   Email   is available to all but some individuals may have limited access to a computer due to the role they carry out on board but will have the opportunity to check regularly.   Postal   service is also available to those deployed, although not free, they can send letters to you. Surface Unit post is received and collected each time the Unit is alongside so you may find you get a few letters drop on your mat together.   Mobile Phones  can be taken on deployment so whilst away it may be possible, but not guaranteed, for a serving person to use their mobile telephone at sea. This usage is governed by the Unit Comms Team under direction from Navy Command and the CO. There will be times when the use of mobile phones is forbidden due to safety or security reasons so try not to get overly anxious if you are unable to get connected at the time you arranged. Service personnel and their families are advised to check out their phone provider's terms & conditions, along with the associated cost of calls abroad. There have been occasions where Serving personnel have incurred considerable debt due to mobile phone usage. Social Media messaging and video capability is increasing in usage whilst the Unit is deployed due to many now having WiFi capability - Skype, Facebook Messenger, Facetime and What’s App, etc. When using these please be careful not to mention dates and locations as this would be classed as a ‘breach of security’ and could jeopardise the Units programme/movements. Due to operational security and for your own peace of mind whilst using Social Media there are some useful guidelines on the following websites: Think before you share Get Safe Online   How can I communicate with other Families and Friends? This is normally requested by the Serving Person during Pre-Deployment Briefs, but is also attached to this post so that you can read it online or download to your personal device. If you do not get a postal pack and you would like one then please email rnrm-wio@royanavymail.mod.uk and we will pop one in the post to you.   Support for Children – Memory boxes are available for all children on request – these include a notebook, worksheets and colouring sheets, pencils, eraser and sharpener, post-its, seeds and a voucher from Naval Children’s Charity as well as two well used publications – Hello from Home and When a Special Person goes Away. This box is very much there to give children a place to store all those important things that can be shared with their Service Person when they next see them. These can also be requested via rnrm-wio@royalnavymail.mod.uk   Community Activities – Normal practise would see activities delivered within centres close to RN Unit areas but recently these have been taken online using both Facebook and Zoom to deliver activities to all wherever you may live within the UK and Overseas. Some of these will be deployment orientated and some specific to individual units. Keep an eye out for these within the official Facebook groups – these can be found attached to the  Royal Navy Family & People Support  Facebook page - you can also search by using HMS  Ship  Community which is the naming convention for all officially run and moderated groups. Keeping in Touch – this is not only carried out via Facebook as not all information can be posted within third party Social Media but also in the RN Forum where you are currently reading this post. If you are not already a member then please do join using the tab at the top of this page. Both the RN Forum and Facebook groups are moderated to keep everyone safe 365 days per year – this also means you have a member of staff available should you have any questions or concerns.   Support at times of crisis – if you do have any concerns or issues whilst your Serving Person is away then the RN FPS Portal is there to support and guide you. They also work closely with JCCC which is the agency to contact should you need to get your Serving Person home if they are deployed outside of UK waters/overseas due to serious illness or bereavement within the family.   The above is only some of the support available, so do make sure you read the attached pack, visit the  Deployment pages  on the RN Website and take a look inside the RN Forum and see if there is also a Facebook Group for your ship/unit. Feel free to ask questions below too and the RN FPS Information Officers will be here to answer them for you.     SSBN  20210303 - DIP_E_SSBN.pdf        SSN  20210303 - DIP_E_SSN.pdf

File: Deployment Information Pack SSBN

File: Deployment Information Pack SSN

File: Deployment Information Pack Generic

Files: Resources

Resources section for Deployment

Files: Gallery

Blog Post: Families Information Pack - Generic

Attached is a copy of the RN FPS Deployment Information Pack which has been designed to support our Families. We are engaging regularly with charitable organisations, the Families Federations and academia to improve employment opportunities for Service partners and spouses. We are keenly aware of the impact that Service life may have on your careers and employment opportunities, and in turn that the current crisis we as a nation find ourselves in, may have further compounded some of these difficulties.   We’d like to thank you for the continued support you give to our Service Personnel which ensures we can maintain operational readiness and also that we can play our part in helping the Nation’s fight against COVID-19. We know that this sometimes comes at a cost to family life and your own career particularly at a time of additional home-schooling responsibilities, without the presence of trusted family members and indeed extra caring responsibilities for elderly relatives to consider. For families with additional needs the changes to routines and difficulty accessing support you have previously relied upon will make this even tougher. The transition of easing the lockdown may also present difficulties in the form of new routines depending on your employer’s policies and interpretation of government advice. We would like to inform you however that under new regulations as part of a ‘support bubble’ for those Service families, with a partner deployed, you are allowed to visit and stay with one other family with your children. This ‘support bubble’ would only apply to one other household.   The MOD’s Partner Employment Steering Group which includes representatives from the single Services, Families Federations and academic experts in the field of partner employment, continues to meet virtually to discuss what support we can provide to you and to ensure that it is coherent and meets your needs. The group understands that the current crisis will for many of you exacerbate some of the difficulties you already face. Acknowledging this they asked that we as Minister for Defence People and Veterans and Director of Armed Forces Personnel Policy, write to you to emphasise this and to signpost you to existing resources and organisations that may be helpful. The annex *  included with this letter provides details of the employment support that is available to partners and spouses. For example, information about Families Forces Jobs: a job platform specifically for Service families.   Finally, we urge you to keep looking after yourselves and keep on supporting each other as you are so good at doing, whilst adhering to the Government’s latest guidelines. Yours sincerely,  JOHNNY MERCER MP Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State and Helen Helliwell Director Armed Forces People Policy   *  The annex mentioned is contained within the attached PDF.

Forum: Forum

Blog: Announcements

Group: Deployment
